Managing people for the first time?
You got the job because you were good at the work. Hey Compono is new manager coaching that fits your personality: get clear on how you lead, and rehearse the hard moments out loud before they're real. By voice or text, day or night.
What should a first time manager focus on?
Four things, early. Get clear on your own leadership approach, have a real first conversation with each person on your team, build the feedback habit from week one, and rehearse the hard moments before they happen. Hey Compono gives a first time manager an AI coach for all four. It knows your work personality and works by voice or text, 24/7, in the moments you'd otherwise face alone.
Nobody teaches the people part
Most companies promote their best individual contributor and hope for the best. Management training, if it comes at all, is generic and arrives months after your first hard week.
Your first weeks set patterns that are hard to undo later. The habits you build now, in how you listen and how you deliver feedback, follow you for the rest of your career as a manager.
A coach in your pocket works differently to a course. It covers the moment you're actually facing, on the day you're facing it.
- The first 1:1s. What do you actually ask, and what do you do with the answers?
- Feedback to someone more experienced than you. Saying it straight when part of you wants to soften it into nothing.
- Delegating work you'd do faster yourself. Letting go of the tasks that got you promoted in the first place.
- Saying no to people who were your peers last month. Holding the line without losing the relationship.
How Hey Compono helps new managers
Coaching for the job you have now, not the one you just left.
Get clear on how you lead
A two minute assessment reads your work personality, one of eight types. From the first conversation, your coaching is shaped around your natural defaults as a leader, so the advice fits how you actually operate.
Plan the moment before you're in it
First 1:1s, delegating, feedback, saying no. Tell the coach what you're walking into with "Add context for this conversation" and build your opening line together, so the conversation starts on your terms.
Rehearse it out loud
Run a voice role play and the coach pushes back the way a real person might. You get instant feedback, and you can go again until the words feel like yours. Every rehearsal is private to you.
Track what actually changes
Set challenges and up to three goals, with reminders and streaks to keep you honest. The coach remembers what you're working on, at 10pm on a Sunday or 7am before the meeting.
A coach for the moments in between
Not everything is a set-piece conversation. Most of managing is small calls made quickly, and the coach is there for those too.
- Word the tricky message. It will help you phrase a difficult note to a specific person, so it lands the way you meant it.
- Think out loud before you decide. Talk through who should take which piece of work before you hand anything out.
- Prepare for the meeting above you. Managing up is part of the job now, and you can rehearse that as well.
- Pick up where you left off. Transcripts, downloadable session summaries and Continue Conversation mean nothing gets lost between sessions.
See your team's personalities, not just your own
Hey Compono Business puts one coach in every person's pocket, and gives you the picture you've been guessing at, from $13 USD per employee per month. Every member of the team gets coaching that fits their personality, and you get the insight to lead them as individuals. A new manager shouldn't have to work each person out by trial and error.
- Team Personality Wheel. Every personality on your team, on one view.
- An Interaction Guide for each colleague. How to brief them, and how to give feedback they'll actually hear.
- Conflict styles. Know how each person handles friction before it shows up.
- Private by design. No manager, admin or Compono employee can read anyone's coaching conversations.

Common questions
I've just been promoted. Where do I start?
With yourself. Take the two minute assessment and discover your work personality, so you understand your own defaults before you try to read anyone else's. Then plan a real first conversation with each person on your team, and let the coach help you build each one. Track it all as challenges and goals, with reminders so nothing slides while you're finding your feet.
How do I run my first 1:1s?
Go in with two jobs: understand the person, and agree how the two of you will work together. Ask how they like to work and what gets in their way, then listen more than you talk. You can rehearse the whole conversation with Hey Compono first, using "Add context for this conversation" to describe the person and the situation, so the real one feels familiar. Keep them regular even when things get busy; the habit matters more than any single agenda.
How do I give feedback without damaging the relationship?
Anchor it in a specific behaviour and its impact, not in the person, and say it early while it's still small. Feedback usually lands badly when it's been rehearsed silently for weeks and finally comes out sideways. Practising out loud with the coach first, including the pushback you're worried about, makes the real conversation calmer and more useful for both of you.
Can I practise conversations before having them?
Yes, that's the core of it. Describe the situation and the coach plays the other person, pushing back the way they might on the day. Every session gives you instant feedback and a transcript, and you can download a summary to review before the real thing. You can also continue any conversation later, right where it stopped. There's a whole page on practising difficult conversations.
What if my whole company rolls this out?
That's Hey Compono Business: one coach for every person in the business, from $13 USD per employee per month. As a manager you also get the Team Personality Wheel, an Interaction Guide for each colleague, conflict styles and a manager dashboard, so leading the team stops being guesswork. See Hey Compono Business for the detail.
Is it private from my own manager?
Yes. Coaching conversations are private by default, and in Hey Compono Business no manager, admin or Compono employee can read them. That means you can use the coach for the conversation you're dreading with your own boss, too. What you say to it stays yours.
Your first hard conversation as a manager is coming. Practise for it.
