Legal recruitment agency interview prep for Australian firms

Recruitment agency interview prep works best when you shift from proving your skills to showing how your specific work personality solves a client's problem. An agency interview is really a partnership meeting: the recruiter needs to see that you are a safe, high-performing bet for their reputation before they pitch you to their best clients.

Walking into an agency office, or hopping on the video call, feels different from a standard company interview because the stakes are shifted. You are not talking to a hiring manager. You are talking to a professional matchmaker whose commission and reputation depend on your performance. Send a client a dud and they lose a contract. Send a star and they win long-term business.
That means your prep has to centre on reliability and self-awareness. Recruiters have seen plenty of candidates who look good on paper but cannot explain why they work the way they do. If you have ever been told you are too quiet or too aggressive, this is the moment to show you understand that trait and know how to manage it. The best candidates do not just list duties, they explain the how behind the work, and that starts with looking inward before you look at the job ad.

A lot of prep falls into the trap of memorising STAR answers with no soul, and recruiters can smell a canned response from across the room. What they actually want is to understand your work personality, the natural way you behave once the pressure is on and the honeymoon phase of a new job is over.
Think of a time you led a project through a crisis. A Doer will talk about the tasks they ticked off to hold the schedule. An Evaluator will talk about analysing the data to find the most logical way out. Both are right, and they are very different. If you cannot name which one you are, the recruiter will struggle to place you in the right culture. The free work personality assessment gives you that language in about two minutes, so you can say you are an Auditor who thrives on precision rather than just a hard worker.
You would not turn up to a first date knowing nothing about the person, and the same applies here, except in agency land you have two targets. First, the agency. What is their niche: tech, healthcare, creative? A high-end executive search firm calls for a more formal register than a boutique creative shop.
Second, dig into the roles they advertise. Even before they name the client, the language in the ad usually reveals the industry and the type of company. Are they after someone to shake things up or someone to steady the ship? Stability points to a Coordinator or an Auditor. Change points to a Pioneer or a Campaigner. The more you align your prep to those signals, the easier you make the recruiter's decision to say yes to you.
Recruiters love behavioural questions because they reveal how you handle the interpersonal side of work. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a manager is not an invitation to bash your old boss. It is a test of your conflict style. Do you seek harmony like a Helper, or focus on the facts like an Auditor?
Knowing your blind spots lets you be honest in a way recruiters value. Something like I am a Campaigner, so I am strong on the big vision, and I use checklists to make sure I do not miss the detail shows real maturity. Do not forget the basics either: have your numbers ready. Sales targets, efficiency gains, retention rates. Data gives the recruiter concrete proof of the skills on your resume, and it is easy for them to sell on.
The interview does not end when you close the laptop. Send a brief, professional email within 24 hours. Thank the recruiter, and reinforce one specific point from your conversation that shows your fit. It proves you were listening and genuinely interested.
Even if this role does not land, the recruiter now holds a profile of you. If you were prepared and self-aware, you become the first call when the next role opens. That is why a consistent sense of your own work personality is such an advantage. If you want to see how a recruiter's tools support candidate prep, take a look at Hey Compono for recruiters.
The free assessment takes four questions and about two minutes, and gives you language to explain how you work.
Take the Free AssessmentLead with your versatility and reliability. A recruiter needs confidence they can place you across different environments, so highlight how you adapt and be very clear about what you want in your next role.
Yes, but frame them through self-awareness. Use your work personality to explain why you have certain tendencies and, more importantly, the systems you use to manage them well.
Match the agency's brand. Dress formally for a corporate firm and smart-casual for a creative or tech-focused agency. When unsure, slightly over-dressed beats under-dressed.
Send a thank-you email within 24 hours. If you have not heard back within the timeframe they gave, usually a few days, a polite note to check on your application is perfectly acceptable.
